Point of View – Sarah Elworthy’s account of racing the
US Open/World Arenacross Finals

Coming into the Arenacross World Finals in Las Vegas, NV, I had no idea how my riding abilities would stack up against the pro class competition. Vegas was to be my first pro race and I was a little nervous how my speed would compare to the other girls.  The heat race went better than I could have ever imagined!  I came out of the start on the inside gate and grabbed the holeshot, I lead the heat gate drop to the checkered flag. There was not a huge turnout for the Pro Women’s class so the promoters had combined our heats, and I won.  This gave me confidence that I had a shot to win the Arenacross World Championship.  As the riders lined up on the gate for the main event I tried to remain calm as I got more and more nervous, as the thirty second board went up I focused on the gate.  When the gate dropped another rider and I collided putting me in last place as we entered into the arena.  I pushed hard and passed as many people as I could before the checkered flag fell.  When the race ended I had worked my way up to forth, not bad for my first pro race.  I’m looking forward to returning to Vegas next year and hoping for a larger turnout in the WMA Pro Class.- Sarah Elworthy #136
